In addition to numerous opera recordings and CD productions, he made three opera films: "Carmen", "La traviata" and "Otello". His TV version of "Tosca" at the original locations in Rome was broadcast in 117 countries and seen by more than a billion viewers. In 1990, he founded the "Three Tenors" with José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti, who were able to attract new audiences to the opera through their worldwide success. In 2009 Plácido Domingo sang Simon Boccanegra, his first baritone role. Since then he has sung Rigoletto, Nabucco, Gianni Schicchi, Luisa Miller, Tamerlano and Les pêcheurs de perles, among others.

As a conductor, he has conducted over 500 opera performances and concerts, including the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras and the Staatskapelle Berlin.
